Managing earwax is an essential part of maintaining good ear health, yet it’s often overlooked or mishandled

Effective Earwax Removal: A Guide by Woodard Hearing Centers

by | Aug 5, 2024 | Earwax Removal

Did you know that earwax serves a very important role? It helps to keep our ears healthy and protects our ear canals from harmful foreign objects like dirt and bacteria. However, sometimes too much of a good thing can cause problems.

If you have too much earwax, it can become impacted and clog your ears. Excess earwax may lead to itchiness, tinnitus, a clogged feeling, and even muffled or impaired hearing. If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, you may benefit from a professional ear cleaning.

Managing earwax is an essential part of maintaining good ear health, yet it’s often overlooked or mishandled. At Woodard Hearing Center, we understand the importance of effective and safe earwax removal. Read on to learn how to manage your ear health properly.

Safe Earwax Removal

If you need earwax removal, you’re not alone! It’s nothing to be embarrassed about—nearly 12 million Americans are treated for excess earwax every year.

Now, before you head to Google and begin to search for home remedies, we encourage you to proceed with caution. While you’ll find no shortage of suggestions for removing earwax in the comfort of your home, not all of these home remedies are safe. I know it can be very tempting to reach for the cotton swabs, but try to resist. And whatever you do, don’t drip hot wax into your ears! You could be left in a much worse position than you were in before.

Why Should You Avoid Cotton Swabs?

While using a cotton swab may feel satisfying in the moment, they can do more harm than good. This method pushes the wax deeper into your ear canal, which only impacts the wax further and causes a more severe problem. Please avoid sticking anything in your ears! Professional earwax removal can keep your precious ears healthy and help you hear better for years to come.

Over-the-Counter Solutions

If your symptoms are mild, over-the-counter ear drops may be effective. These solutions usually use hydrogen peroxide or saline. Be sure to follow the directions on the package. If over-the-counter solutions don’t provide relief, then the best thing you can do is seek the help of a hearing care professional.

At Woodard Hearing Centers, we are committed to removing earwax safely. If you have frequent earwax buildup, you may benefit from a routine cleaning done once or twice a year.
