There are many questions when trying to decide if you should use rechargeable hearing aid technology. The article below addresses your questions.
What are the benefits of a rechargeable hearing aid vs. hearing aids with disposable batteries?
First, it is important to learn how disposable hearing aid batteries work. Traditionally hearing aid batteries were made with mercury, these days the zinc air battery is most popular. Zinc air batteries require oxygen to activate. Thus, once the sticky tab on the back is removed, the battery starts to drain, even when not in use. For example, once the tab is removed, the average lifespan of a size 10 battery is 3-7 days. Therefore, on average, a size 10 battery would need to be replaced every 5 days.Meanwhile, rechargeable batteries provide confidence and certainty to the wearer that their battery will be ready to go each morning after a night’s charge and then throughout the day. Just like you would charge your mobile devices overnight, the same routine would take place with a rechargeable hearing aid. With rechargeable hearing aids, you will never have to miss or pause an important or special moment due to having to change a battery. Are all rechargeable hearing aid created equally?
Even when a hearing aid uses the same batteries, the hearing aid technology is what drives the battery consumption. Choosing the right technology and adopting recommended care techniques will prolong the life or your rechargeable hearing aid.How do I choose the right hearing aid technology?
Look for efficiency and ratings on the hearing aid battery drain. Widex offers the lowest battery drain in the industry. Lower battery drain means higher performance for your hearing aids and rechargeable batteries.

What can I do to prolong the life of my rechargeable hearing aid?

  • Silver zinc batteries need consistent charging to avoid over discharging. To prevent overcharging, Widex recommends avoiding opening and closing the battery door after the battery has completely discharged (the “low battery indicator” has presented).
  • When a hearing aid has too high of a current drain, it is more likely to drain the battery completely, especially when streaming.
  • If the battery is completely drained, it needs a full 6-8 hours to charge. If not charged for the full time, the battery will start the next day only partially charged, resulting in less hours of available use. If this practice is continued overtime, it can affect the performance of the battery.

Minimum consumption, maximum performance
Because Widex hearing aids boast a low power consumption, BEYOND Z needs less charging time to keep the battery working optimally, even when a patient uses the BEYOND Z for as much as 16 hours a day with active streaming. The result is potentially better short-term and long-term battery performance.
